Replacement Tweeters

New 5/19/05

One of my door speakers is in bad shape (1997 Mach). Sat. I pulled out the other to send to a fellow owner in need so now I need to decide what to do for replacements. I always thought the stock speakers were 5x7 but the one that I pulled out was closer to 6x8 than 5x7. I can get the Infinity 5752 5x7/6x8's, and separate Infinity 1001 tweeters, or I can buy a set of Infinity components- 6x8 woofers and separate tweeters. Or I could be cheap and buy a lesser pair of 6x8's such as Sony's, and buy the Infinity tweeters. I'm guessing the Infinity components will require more power than the stock amp produces. Also the 5752's may be hard to find. Lastly the stock 6x8's don't seem to play that big of a part in sound production. For the past couple of days with one of mine missing I haven't detected that much difference. I would like to stick with the stock amp if possible. If I choose to buy a set of components, I have a question- all of the component sets come with their own crossovers. I'm guessing that I should use these, in fact maybe when I remove the stock speakers I may not be able to keep the little bit of crossover that they use. So should the crossover be mounted in the door near the woofer and then run a new set of wires inside the door up to the tweeter and abandon the factory tweeter wires? Installing a component set when the tweeters are some distance away from the woofers has always been a mystery to me.

I went with Infinity Reference 6802 (6x8's) for the door's and rear deck ( 2 of the screw hole line up but you have to make 2 new holes in the door panel for the other 2 holes) and Infinity Reference 1001T 1" tweeters up front and I am using the stock amp. The tweeters come with the cross over. The infinity 6x8's do some what play a role in sound as the tweeters swivel on an angle to point where you want them. You won't believe the difference in sound compared to what you took out and the stock amp has more than enough power unless you want to rattle the panels then would need an upgraded Amp and Sub anyway. You also only get so much bass out of a 6x8 speaker. The factory Amp does have it's limits but that is way beyond the volume that you would be listening any way so it's not really a factor IMO. I used the Factory wiring and the Infinity tweeters are a bit smaller than the factory ones but a glue gun fixed up that mounting problem.
