Beth Acevedo - Cam Failure #466

New 10/28/2004, updated 10/29/04

Hi there. I am devastated and furious. My Ford dealer recommended I take a look at your site. I have a 1996 SHO, with 64,000 miles on it. Last Saturday, it totally died at a stop light. It turns out, that I have "cam spline, and engine has taps." Well, I was told that my cam was stripped, and I would need a WHOLE NEW ENGINE!!! I was also told that there was NO reason this should have happened. The guy I got in touch with (finally, because no Ford dealership anywhere near me wanted to even touch it,) told me that he has seen this happen many times before, and that there is no way to tell if it's going to happen, or why it happens. I do not have 5 to 8 thousand dollars to get a new engine. I contacted Ford directly, and told them that if there was no reason for it to have happened (my car is totally maintained,) then they should take responsibility for a faulty product. They basically told me to go piss into the wind, too bad, no help from them at all. I want to know if this is a more common problem than Ford will say, and what you would recommend I do with this big red bitch, now that she is sitting in my driveway. Ford will not talk to me about any problems regarding the SHO, according to them, the cars are fine, and I just have bad luck. You'd have an easier time getting me to believe I could nail Jello to a tree, than to buy into Ford's response. I told them I will never buy another Ford again, and that I will tell everyone I see that they are a rotten company. Do you have any ideas about what is going on with this car? Are there a lot of folks out there that feel they have gotten burned? I still owe 3500 on it.

Thanks,
Beth Acevedo

2. Car failed on Saturday, 10/23/04, at 8:30pm

3. city street, at a stoplight

4. a bit over 64,000 miles

5. I was at a complete stop, at a red light

6. I was stopped

7. purchased October 2001, used, from a friend who garage kept it

8. about 34,000 miles

9. Beth and Rolando Acevedo,

10. I heard my engine knocking a week before, but Firestone kept it for 2 days and could find nothing wrong with it. They thought that it might just be the oil valves.

11. I called Ford's 1-800 #

12. NO! The woman was no help, she told me there was no recall on the car, and no record of problems with it, like I just had bad luck. She told me to get a lawyer if I wanted, refused to give me Ford's headquarters phone #, and told me that whatever decision customer service made, was Ford's ultimate decision.

13. Firestone (215-725-6550) on Elgin Ave is where I always take my car. They had it for 2 days and finally found the problem, and couldn't believe what they saw! No Ford dealership would take my car, told me they had never seen the problem, and wouldn't know what to do with an SHO anyway. Craig, at Burghe's Ford in Ambler, PA was the only honest and knowledgeable guy at Ford. He told me about the web site, and said he had seen this problem a few times before, and that there was no reason for it to happen, and no way to tell it was going to happen. He told me not to bring my car in, because he knew it needed a new engine, and I couldn't afford the 6 to 8 grand, not including the labor.

14. No one can find any reason that this should have happened, other than it's a defective product.

15. Ford made a defective part, car is a lemon

16. I was told not to repair it, it would cost 6 to 8 thousand dollars, not including labor

17. Ford can own up to it's faulty product, and fix my engine for free, so I can at least sell it and buy a new car, but NOT a Ford! OR...They can give me a credit for a new car, of comparable value to what they sold the SHO at. That's about 30 or 40 grand?
