Catless Y Pipes

New12/02/2006

Each one was made on the car to insure proper fitment

It has all 4 bungs, tuner users block off back two ports. Others would need to pick up 02 sensor eliminators from Jegs

Tuner users, the 4th bung is centered in the stainless Y for wideband 02 operation
I have 4 aluminized pipes left.
1 is already installed on a car, Looks, fits and sounds Great!

I want one, but it's going to have to wait for next years car budget....

wait, I don't have a car budget, oh well.

I want one, I want one. Oh wait, I've already got one. :)

Ok, I'm stupid, but wasn't there quite some discussion of how the v8 needed back pressure?

So...what's up? All the talk in the past of how the v8 may only gain a few hp on top with an opened up exhaust at the cost of low end and possibly 1/4 mile times, so...

You need to tune for them.

There was also lots of discussion about how the V8 "falls flat on it's
face" with the exhaust opened up. I've proven that to be false, at
least on my car.

Your car is a freak sir!

So that begs the question.... How do you maximize the exhaust velocity?

Paul

Velocity is speed right? So to increase the speed of the exhaust gasses wouldn't you need to decrease the size of the tubing it was passing through?

On a NA car I always thought you wanted a certain amount of back pressure, more back pressure favored low end while less back pressure favored top end.

Yes that would work, how about keeping the gasses hot and then open it up after the Y pipe?

Paul

We were in the middle of that discussion!!
It is true about the velocity (as it’s not really “backpressure”, but velocity and the scavenging pulses), and although tuning can help, it can’t overcome the laws of physics.

Catless y-pipes are used on the blower V6 SHOs, as the cats don’t stand up to the blower cars too well. Don’t seem to know of many blower V8 SHOs, though.

To be totally honest with you the test results were never conclusive. Lots of butt dynos say they lost power but no dyno proof. There was some 1/4 mile tests done weeks and months apart that show inconclusive data.

I remember "discussing" this with you in 99 or 00, stating to you that my car seemed faster, we argued a small amount :) My car started out at 16.4 in the 1/4 the first year or so, then I started modifying shit and got it to a consistent 15.0, only got 2-3 14's until I went on the bottle. Then I was getting 13.8's but was still being beaten by Scottie Waters who had an uncorked exhaust. I never did the unhooking of the exhaust (I'm way to lazy to drive 1000 miles to crawl under the car:)) He turned a 13.7 or 6 IIRC but then it went BOOM, and so did his next one.

Ian's car keeps getting better and better especially since the exhaust is un done, and Paul is working on a single exhaust with large diameter piping and he says that he feels a better feeling with it like this. Unfortunately both cars are suffering from DTS (dead tranny syndrome) so yet another year passes and we are pretty much in the same place I left off in 04 with the selling of my car.

The engine is a vacuum pump, With tuning and a bigger intake theoretically it should show a gain. Now I'm not claiming anything at this point, because to be totally honest I have no clue what it will do. Sure I'm hoping for gains, but surer than shit I wont make false accusations like Vadim did. I've been working on getting a day for the dyno for some time now, A .. for some tuning work and now B.. with the Catless y pipe. At the same time I'mImp having a y-pipe made up for my 02 Duratec and plan on creating a decent tune for that car as well. You can bet your ass that I will do a before and after test strictly on the pipe just to see what happens. Imp interested for my own reasons if nothing else.

Worse case scenario.. for the cost of the pipe which is the equivalent of a set of mufflers installed, it sounds great to hear a V8 like this. Only heard it on Ians car soar, which by the way has no gasket and his cut out is stuck open just a touch so its leaking and loud. Tomorrow Ill fix the leak and his cutout to see what it sounds like, also Chris will be installing his on the 99 which has the same exhaust as my 97 did and I expect to have wood…

Best case scenario.. it will help Carters car breath, it should make the MIX V8 cars sound awesome, it surely will improve the flow into the turbos Im about ready to order, and it shows a gain of +5hp or more.

Who knows? But to say that tests were done side by side same day same conditions are wrong and it’s the only way to say yes or no that has not been done. Im offering them here first, im sure Ill have no problems selling them on the forum. So realistically there are only 3 left, I have one maybe so Id count on 2 left today.
