The latch that pops the hood is not working and the hood won't open on my 97. What is the fix or how can I get it to open? It's always something.

Happened to fellow Fort Smithian right after he bought the car, he removed the drivers side fender and found that he could Pinch the cable jacket from there to get the hood open. Mine failed right at the handle under the dash
enabling me to grab it with a pair of pliers.

I think the cable is not releasing the latch. Is there a fix for this problem?

I should correct my post; He removed the inner fender and pinched the cable jacket with a pair of vise grip and uses that to open his hood.
In my case, the cable is not broken but if somebody "taps" on the hood as I pull the release it will pop up. I adjusted the hood rest pins a little and lubed the latch.

Have someone pull/pry up on the corners of the hood out by the
headlights. Pull the release while they are doing this. Once the hood
pops up, spray the latch-catching assembly (just above the radiator)
generously with some WD 40 or similar. Then give a few squirts of oil
in there too(Wd 40 is a great penetrant, but it dries out). Close and
open the hood a few times.
Then try it.

Try pushing down on the hood while someone pulls on the cable. Once you
have it open, spray some lube on the latch mechanism, that should solve it.

Also put some on a rag, wipe the pistons and put some on the upper and lower
seal.

I had this problem and just adjusted my hood adjusters up a turn (not enough to put it out of alignment) and that helped too. My hood still doesn't pop up, but when I pull the latch and walk to the front and pull on a corner by a headlight it comes right up.

If you want the hood to pop up do this..........
Raise the bumper stops a bit but not enough to cause a gap. The loosens and lowers the latch over the radiator. This will give you a nice pop up of an inch or so and still close easily with a 10" drop.

The lubricant worked! I would have never guessed. Thanks!
