I did Paul Nimz's Phenolic Spacers on Rex Mauney's car last weekend.
Here's a bit of info on it with a few pix.
1) Pull the Lower Intake Manifold - LIM - In the pic, one gasket has
been removed, one is still in place. It gets pretty grimy down there
and must be cleaned up prior to reinstallation of gaskets.
2) Take the LIM gaskets and drill out the rivets so you can take the
thin outer gaskets. Thick inner gasket is not reused.
3) Take a stiff wire brush, hold the thin gaskets down, and brush AWAY
from you gently to dislodge the loose gasket material.
4) This is what the scraped gaskets look like. Wipe them down with a
good cleaner.
5) Paint the gaskets with a good high temp engine paint. 2 coats is plenty.
6) put the gaskets back together - raised surfaces AWAY from Phenolic
spacer now in the middle.
7) what they look like together. They seal best if the paint is still
slightly tacky when you put it back together.

5 6 7
Put everything back together using the same bolts you took out to
remove the LIM.

You don't need the gaskets with the phenolic spacers. Just paint the spacers and
install them in place of the gaskets.

Aluminum is a very dynamic metal. Get it hot and it moves - A LOT - I
prefer the steel "skates" between the phenolic and Aluminum.
Especially important if they really are working, because one aluminum
surface will be getting very hot every time the engine heats up, but
the insulated side should not move as much, resulting in a constant
"scrubbing" action.
That's why I did it like I did it.

Mine have been in since July '06 and I haven't had any problems.

I also have a set in my 96 Medium Graphite. Got them from someone who
got them from Paul and then sold thier SHO. They've been in since
October 06 with no problems. Can't really say whether they are good
for a damn yet, as it's been too cold all the time I've had them in,
but I had great pleasure from the one in my 5.0 Tbird, so I expect
these spacers will behave similarly.
