Root Cause: Special (Assignable) Variation within the Design Process and/or
within the Production Process. The design and/or the process was not capable.
This type of inherent variation will most probably lead to a 100% failure rate.
Solution: Design, produce and distribute a substitute cam. Reimburse affected
customers based on a failure cost formulary.
In 1982, Ford adopted Dr. Demming's quality system philosophy as a means of
transforming the company into a quality based company. I quote the following
from Ford's "Mission, Values and Guiding Principles"
Mission: "...Our mission is to improve continually our products and
services to meet our customer's needs, allowing us to prosper as a
business..."
Values: "Products. Our products are the end result of our efforts, and they
should be the best in serving our customers worldwide. As our products are
viewed, so are we viewed."
Guiding Principles: "Quality comes first. To achieve customer satisfaction,
the quality of our products and services must be our number one priority."
"Customers are the focus of everything we do. Our work must be done with
customers in mind, providing better products and services than our
competition."
This quality issue is starting to become well known throughout the internet and
the automotive industry, and it "will" receive even more attention in
the future if nothing is done with respect to a resolution. I believe the manner
of approach by the executives of Ford will have far reaching consequences on the
customer quality perception that will be conveyed upon their company. Denial or
unwillingness by Ford to participate will only further enhance the cost of this
quality issue.
