Loctite Applied

new 12/24/2003

I know you guys stress that loctiting will not prevent the sprockets from spinning free from the camshafts, but I went down to a Ford dealership in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, (Freedom Ford) and got it done there anyways. I thought it would be cheaper now then later considering I needed to swap plugs and the upper intake would be off anyways (164000 km). Besides, the closest person willing to weld them is about 2000 km away. Anyways, I talked to the Service Manager there for a good 45 mins to an hour about this stuff and shimming of the valves as well. Since he'd never done the loctite procedure before and he wanted to see what was involved in shimming the valves, he offered to loctite the cams for free. All I paid for was a can of cleaner and 3 hours labor (to change plugs), a grand total of $292.80. I supplied my own spark plugs (about $60 I think, bought a long time ago) and my own loctite which I purchased for about $7. The only reason I'm writing this is to show you guys not ALL Ford dealerships are trying to take you to the cleaners, there are still SOME good people in this world. Besides, if any of my cams fail now, it's under Ford warranty, I did what they told me to do, and if this lawsuit thing goes through, Ford has no excuses not to reimburse people and supply them with a better cam if we followed THEIR solution to this problem, rather than our welding solution which may warp the camshaft. Regarding the lawsuit, I'll probably be left out of it since I'm in Canada anyways.

Just my thoughts,

You may want to read this and reconsider your alternatives. Locktite is nothing more than a band aid. It by itself will not prevent cam sprocket failure.

Nike,

Not trying to be a downer, but the "loctite" solution is not
any sort of fix.  IT is a band-aid and not much more help
than putting an actual band-aid on the cams!  :)

Also, although this is a Ford "approved" procedure, it by no
means provides any sort of warranty or guarantee if your
cams should fail immediately or anytime in the future.

I just wanted you to know that unless your dealer wrote and
signed a form expressly giving you a warranty on the cam and
associated engine parts after the loctite work, you have NO
warranty, and even then, I would not bet real money (which
you are doing) on that holding up when the failure happens.

While nobody knows with any real degree of acuracy, how many
cams will fail, or even if YOUR cams will fail, the good bet
is that well over 50% of cars WILL eventually have a
failure, maybe a LOT over 50%!  Your odds are not good.

I would strongly recommend that you still get the cams
welded if you like the SHO and plan on keeping it.  I love
my V8, and with the welded cams I enjoy it so much more.

Just trying to help out a fellow SHO owner.
