Not
Worried About The Fab Work
I remember when I said I was putting an M90 supercharger on a SHO V8 and
all the folks that said "You can't do it".
My reply, "No, YOU can't do it". Then I did it, then Doug did it even better
than me, from what we learned doing the first one.
Now. I'm piddling with SHO R T S' drivetrain to get a M112 supercharger on it.
Of COURSE, you can't do it......
Now, Naysayers, please, GTF out of my way while I do it. Thank you very much.
That said. Compression is a huge problem. 10.5:1 compression is WAY too high for
the 22 - 25 PSI of boost I'm planning around. I'm looking a ways to enhance the
breathing of the already awesome V8 SHO head while at the same time reducing the
compression to a more manageable level. I think the old, crappy heads of the
earliest 4.6 Cobra's might be perfect. Big runners, big valves, horrid
compression. EVERYONE in the early 4.6 Cobra world is trying to put in the PI (P
erformance I mproved ) heads to get the output up to the 320 HP promised but
never delivered. Old heads can be had for relatively low prices.
I know I can get the heads to bolt down with a little machining. I'll have to
bite the bullet on the head gaskets - Cometic gasket Co. are kind of a$$holes,
so I'll probably make my own multi layer gaskets myself on a waterjet. Front
cover and valve covers are going to be interesting. I'll have to start with the
V8SHO front cover and go from there. We'll see what happens.

They come even close to lining up??? Sounds amazing.

My lightning has PI heads. The early gen 2s didn't have them. modmax.com has PI
4.6 heads for about 800-900 a set. Oddly enough the 4.6 mustang heads will fit
the 5.4 triton motor.

Also that M112, is it a stock supercharger? A lightning friend of mine does a
"home port" on lightning superchargers. Basically does what stiegermeier does.
Inspects bearings, and replaces if needed, changes oil, fills silencer holes for
a very cheap price! Just a thought..........

On that Lightning motor the 4.6 heads increase the compression over the open
chamber 5.4 heads and hence, the performance.
Cobra supercharger is just fine for me, right now. If I 'need' to get more air
down its throat I have all the Stegemeyer (sp?) port mapping in my CPU.
And a grinder.

Man I hope that M112 is just fine. That's a massive blower for such a tiny V8
:). Its the same as the lightning just different snout. Stiegermeier is a good
comapany, but if you have their process you might want to forward them to
me......

Not to be the turd in the punchbowl here but, how much torque can your tranny
hold?

Not that it trumps your question, but he does have a manual transmission in that
car.
It does make me think of some alternate lyrics to a Christmas Carol, though...

SHO R T S doesn't have a manual. But a better built tranny that ford should have
designed!

My tranny is arguably the best Gen 3 tranny in the world.
I took it into my company machine shop and milled the clutch packs. What was
once a 5 - 4 - 5 clutch pack arrangement is now a 6 - 5 - 6 arrangement. Stock
tranny lasted 162 miles. Custom tranny lasted 30,000 miles and is still strong.
Between my machine work and the tranny teachings of Doug Lewis (Which I promised
not to tell, so don't ask me) the tranny that I have attached to this engine
with the torque converter made by Fred at Midwesttorqueconverters is in a league
by itself.

news. But my question still stands and I suppose you'll be finding out.
I've just been soured on FWD and high torque for durability and driving
behavior. Personal preference and oem performance disgust generally.
