POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE 2008 SEATTLE

07/18/2008 and continuing

Hi Larry,

Sorry, but I haven’t even had the laptop out of the bag for about a week.

Re golf: Only Bob Harris & I played. Kirk brought his clubs, but crapped out on us. FWIW, Bob shot 50-50=100. I shot 45-45=90.
It was my best round ever.

BUT….I’m still ticked at myself. I started tracking my score on the back nine, which is a big no-no. On eighteen, I was facing a 2’ putt. To sink it would have given me a par and an 89 for the round.

Of course, I choked and missed it, hence the 90!

Good Convention overall. Probably the coolest weather we will ever have for a Convention. Too bad we didn’t have a drag day, times would have been good.

Zero rainfall during the day. Only rain was 12:30 AM last week Friday in Rapid City, then it also rained overnight in Bismarck o the way home.

Caravan was great. No problems at all to hold us up.

Ron

My bad - I had this sittin in a folder and just found it! - UL

Greetings all from Snoqualmie Pass near Seattle!

We managed to pull off one of the biggest surprises of the year for my dad and his 60th birthday coming up in August. This was tough because in trying to let as many people know about it ahead of time without it hitting all of the SHO lists is VERY tough, because I believe Dad is subscribed to all of them.

This pair of cakes was made by Mikes Amazing Cakes in Seattle for the convention which everyone at the banquet did get to thoroughly enjoy! We never even needed to cut into the engine on the left, just the car was enough to feed everyone because of its height!

I would like to give a special thank you to those who helped to cover the cost of the cakes (in no particular order): Ron Porter, Willie Orpurt, Dave Kegel, George Fourchy, Kristen Angermeier, Charlie Newton, Paul & Rosetta Thomas, Doug Lewis, Sergio Perfetti, Kurt Metros, Larry Eck, Paul Nimz, Ben Bentley, Chris Archer, Ian Macoomb, Kurt Gutzka, & Kirk Doucette!

Well this years convention must have really sucked! :}-
Not one postcard. I guess those long evenings-early mornings in the parking lot took their toll. Hope everyone makes it back in one piece!

Since Heather and Reeka were not there together this time that should tend to make the pics more family friendly :-)

That was Memphis - K-Zoo wasn't too wild..

Ohh man remember the night before the track? They went out with Kris after midnight looking for more booze. She rolled in an hour before I got up. Day at the track was scorcher and she was fairly miserable the first couple of hours - then got 2nd wind.

Heck I was thinking about it all week really, I have takena hit from the convention crack pipe repeatedly - but I just didn't have the time, money, or balls (driving my unicorn car that far) for a hit this year around...

Only photo I got was a picture message from Kirk on Sunday evening on caravan out...

Got home from the convention about 45 minutes ago. About 40 miles from the Oregon/Idaho border, while traveling through a gently sweeping, down-hill curve, I ran the right side tires on the rumble strip. I pulled it back slightly and noticed shortly after that the engine was shutdown. I coasted to a stop at a point where road construction was narrowing travel to one lane. I learned shortly after, that all traffic would be stopped in about 1 1/2 hours while blasting would be performed on the hillside and I needed to clear the area. Nothing obvious under the hood and gas would shoot to the raised hood from the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Starting attempts resulted in engine running about 200 rpm and dying. Got towing services on the way but the isolated area meant a 55 minute wait. I left a message for Kirk at the lodge desk to call with suggestions. Another starting attempt failed to fire the engine. Checking for gas pressure again resulted in a dribble so I checked the cut-off switch and it reset! Shook hands with Ian late last night when leaving the parking lot for a little shut eye before this morning's early underway time. Looks like he infected me (you guys are free to run with this). He had the same issue on the way to the convention. The engine fired right up at precisely the time that Kirk called back. Looks like the culprit may have been my spare 1 gal. coolant container that I had stored in the inner fender pocket below the switch. It hadn't been a problem up to this point and there were certainly a lot of quick back an forth maneuvers before this. The container top was about 4 inches below the switch but it was the only thing close that could move. Have pictures and will post some later.

Only three GIII's with a fourth Medium Graphite on a trailer (cam failure) picked up in the area for a trip back to Iowa.

*Man that's a really sad commentary on the representation of GIII V8's at the convention. *

Talked to Ron Porter this evening during one of their scheduled rest stops. So far the casualty list is impressive. Seems El Presidente Don Mallinson's 97 started overheating yesterday as he departed. He had to turn tail and garage the 97 and repack the Chrysler. We hope he is cooled down by now.

Today, during an exit on a sweeper, Ian Macomb's spare tire slid over in the trunk to make contact with the "bump switch". For those few who don't know, it's a fuel pump kill switch located in the right rear fender well meant to keep us from becoming crispy critters in the event of a "perfect" hit. It put them on the side of the road for a while until that one could be figured out. Ron reported that as of @ 5:30PM CDT the caravan had actually made up the time and were back on schedule to arrive at their overnight stop by about 9:30 PM (Mountain Time)

Stay tuned, the saga has just begun
