Postcards from the Edge - Memphis '06

07/11/2006, UPDATED AS NEWS ARRIVES

This is where I hope to be able to post random ramblings from those list members who get to go to the SHO Convention 2006 in Memphis. Send me pictures, lots of pictures. Don't worry about compressing them, I'm on Cable - you can't crush me. Send the road stories, parking lot stories, bar stories, Ian stories, etc. I'll post them up daily for those of us who wish we were there but aren't. Everybody is a correspondent.

TIA

We are off to a good start here in TN......
Heather from Virginia, Ian and Reka from somewhere north of the border, all arrived here in Mt. Juliet, TN (near Nashville) about 6:00pm Saturday. Food on the grill, beer in hand, and a few good friends at the table...what a great way to start the convention. A few hours into the evening we had the unexpected arrival of Marcel and Christina from Ontario.....after 13 hours of driving they still made time to stop by and visit for awhile.
Since most everyone here is familiar with the typical SHO gathering, I don't have to go into detail about the next several hours.
Very enjoyable evening and a great start on what will be an even better week.
We will all be loaded and leaving for Memphis around noon......should be at the hotel by 3:00pm...maybe sooner :)
Hotel by 3:00, beer in hand by 3:05....sounds good to me.

Sounds good!

Washing and waxing the car now, will have to get it loaded up later today as we are going on a float trip Monday. Leaving Tuesday morning. Should see you guys Tuesday, noonish.

Between beers, would someone remind Stout I need a place to sleep.

Leave the light on for me would ya.

Well, We left with an overloaded car this morning Flying LOW.
Got a total of 36 Miles before the Check Engine Light came on, Of
Course. Drove Bravely On Down the Road - Got to a convenient Rest stop
and UNLOADED the Trunk in the Parking Lot because, yep, the #%@&#$%
Code Reader was BURIED.
Turned out to be a bank 1 O2 sensor reading lean - So What.

Kept the Code reader in the car after that. Further down the road the
code set one more time - Hey, Cool, You can clear codes at 85 MPH with
this thing ! ! Never saw the code again.

Rest of the trip was uneventful. Took about 8 Hrs from Chicago. Got to
the Hotel and read their Warm Welcome to Us :-)
Hooked Up with Mr Stout and ventured over to Corky's for some Awesome
BBQ - the Coleslaw goes ON the Sandwich. Met B Cooper (Kermit) in the
parking lot as we pulled in. Went up to the room, DL'd a couple pix,
typed this note to Ya'll & Now it's Sleepy Time.

More to come soon.

We finally made it, we had about an hour delay.....1 puked tranny (not mine), a brief session of musical cars on the trailer, musical drivers behind the wheel, and then musical wheels to get the race rubber off of track car which I got to drive :) later.........

HERE WE ARE.

Ok, I'm headed out to join the welcoming committee, get started on the daily beverage consumption, and decide what's for dinner.
BTW, Stout already made mention of someone who would be crashing on the sofa.........that must be you.

Heather......

they would start checking into finding someone to fix it today. I missed out on alot of the conversation so I'm not sure what's going on with it.

Was it a full moon yesterday ???? I drove the race car about 130 miles, and then got to drive the truck to dinner.....I'm still confused about that one.

Oh, and there was a nice burnout last night but no video, hoping to get another one by the end of the week.....just have to get my hands on someones video camera.

Yep Rick got it right..puked tranny. The shop called me earlier with the amount. Not too bad considering it needs to be rebuilt. I get my baby back on Thursday. Good thing Rick wasn't planning on entering his car in the show otherwise it would have had that nice tranny fluid shine all over it since he was the one behind me when it went! Good thing everyone is in good spirits still even me. Maybe I've just had too many rum and cokes! lol ask Reka! Won't deter me from future conventions..just next time I know not to test my car against a Honda ricer that wasn't even worth my time. We miss you uncl Lar!

Don't know if this counts as an official postcard, but here are a few quick lines. Once I get to a computer with a card reader I can upload some pictures of the parking lot festivities from last night, may have to censor some (mostly to save extensive embarrassment) as it is amazing what SHOws up when the flash fires off and people aren't suspecting.

It is HOT here much like everywhere else. Today Eric was playing with his IR temperature indicator during the car SHOw; Asphalt was around 125 in the sun, the surfaces of parked cars were in the upper 100's. And somehow I was stupid enough to go golfing in all of that....

Most of the group is out at Graceland right now, Later this evening there will be SHO's parked on Beale street in downtown Memphis where I plan to meet up with them there and get some pictures.

Hot in Memphis,

Trust me, Ian was the sober one keeping Reka out of trouble last night. Many of the boys went go karting while Reka demanded refills from me of her rum and Cokes, as such she had quite a head start. Later in the night I had walked away from the coolers and was actually talking cars and Reka comes to me and tells me she needed some Coke in her drink.. She had just refilled with the sauce from the bottle and had a straw in it happily slurping away...

Geesh and I stopped at three drinks, somehow my 1.75L bottle is only about 10%.

Larry:

Reading the content on that page you state that the "I STB" club mandates future attendance. So assuming that it was indeed your busted SHO in Fallon, Nevada two years ago I have to ask where the hell are you this year?

As previously stated, this year I have to act like a grown up with the new gig and new house, and newly fallen tree in my front yard from last nights storm pounding we took. Suxsir.

Slowing down early to get ready for the track, especially after being in the heat all day with the car SHOw. I saw 106f on the bank sign about 5:00pm.....it felt it too.

Made the short drive to Beale Street for dinner, where Don had made special arrangements that allowed us to actually park behind the barriers ON Beale St. which is usually reserved for motorcycle parking and foot traffic only. Had a great meal at Blues City Cafe, I know I put down my fair share of ribs. Took several pictures of the SHO's.....I even managed to ask the right person who took me through the back of one of the places and got me close to the roof for some really good shots. I do believe there is a nice picture of John working on his small T-bone in the pics I am going to be sending Larry to get posted......

ah, what the heck...I'm going to attach a couple of them now. ENJOY

Hope everyone else here is having as much fun as I am.....and for those of you who didn't make it, you don't know what you're missing.

Well, this is just an estimate. Probably Ten SHO's in the parking lot WITHOUT Numbers on them, and Last Night I ran across an Enterprising Young Fellow in the parking lot.
His last name Started with a "W" - Widdenbierman or something, I'm SURE I have it wrong - Anyhow, He was Putting the Number 71 on his Track car for todays festivities.
He just rented a Supercharged Mercedes :-)

Mercedes c230 Kommpressor. Don't think he rented it either. It be nice! Thought he did a good job on the track with it.

Track results =

One dead gen II...

John S (from MI) I won't try spelling his last name...
He had some rod noise that caused him to set out the subsequent track sessions.

The car made it half way back to the hotel before it seized up...

Kenny: Of course you will say the Benz did well since attached is a pic of you passing him, if you say he did well you are merely inflating your position...

Three pics - the dead gen 2 back at the hotel being unloaded
Kenny passing the benz
Parking lot at 10 AM with track day in progress - compare with car SHOw pictures, few SHO's left.

BARNEY DOES IT - BEST OF SHO POPULAR VOTE!!!!!

Eric just got it.

Scott

I just can't tell you how happy I am that Eric Lehmann of Lombard, IL got the best of SHO, popular vote. It's the toughest vote to win. This is the highest compliment that can be paid a SHO owner by other SHO owners, GI, GII, GII all had to vote. I'm also thrilled that I was a small piece of the history of Barney. Jon Martinucci and I did an all dayer to and from Cleveland to get the car for Eric shortly after his accident, which led to his getting this car. I quote Eric, at the time. " Anybody that can type with one finger and has lots of time on their hands can find a 96 Rosemist complete with Factory phone installed in the console.

Pages 10-13 from today.
Props to Tom, SHOCHO from SHOCAGO for winning the bracket. He dialed in a 14.25 and ran a 14.29 in 106+ degree heat. His competitor unfortunately dialed in heat stroke and died!:{- (It's a joke folks) Tom did win fair and square on what is really a quck dial in considering the conditions.

Larry,

IIRC, you had sent a request sometime during the week regarding the golf days, so here’s a quick recap.

Both days were played at Fox Meadows Golf Course, which is a Memphis city course. It worked out well for us, as it was wide open and pretty flat! The weather was about the same on both days (over 100 degrees, sunny, breezy, humid), but the humidity must have been a bit lower on Tuesday, as Tuesday seemed a bit more tolerable.

Anyway, Monday was a foursome, with the following results (split by pairings):

Ron Porter 48 + 48 = 96

Frank Fox: 62 + 55 = 117
Bob Harris:: 50 + 50 = 100

Frank Fox hasn’t played in eight years,  Since I beat him this year, next year is our best 2-of-3 rubber match!!
Tuesday we had a fivesome (Bob Harris dropped out) with the following results (split by pairings):

Tom Ochal: 48 + 46 = 94

Ron Porter 51 + 44 = 95

Frank Fox: 56 (dropped out for back nine)

Scott Kreitemeyer: 69 + 65 = 134
**Ron politely left out the ball count for Capt RowBoat! Darn nice of you Ron!*

Bob Artis: 45 + 44 = 89

Bob Artis was attending his first Convention, and he plays quite well. Tom & I were a good cart pairing. Despite the score, Scott was much improved this year, and actually, he played quite well on the back nine, although the score doesn’t show it, as we just maxed him out on some holes on the front nine

Ron Porter
**Last years golf outing yielded for me the crappy revelation that something was very very wrong with my shoulder. Surgical anniversary for the multiple tears is this month. Still hurts like the devil at times.
