SHO Question from Germany

new 7/20/04

For some reason during a run of 130-135mph (which happens daily) the low coolant light will come on, and the temp gauge goes up to about 2/3....this is the only time it comes on. Not that the situation could be re-created here, but does anyone have any suggestions as to why this would only happen at high speed ?

Engine's working a lot harder up thar - Change the thermostat and clean the radiator fins. The coolant sensor is flaky on higher mileage cars. You can just unplug it or try to sort out the switch and float.

Sustained high MPH requires sustained HP which putts a load on the cooling system that is not transitory in nature the way an occasional WOT is.

I would do a cooling system PC. Flush and fresh antifreeze, hoses not collapsing? Rad cap and thermostat work to spec? Radiator fins clean. No air obstructions in the grill? Water pump is in good condition?

My 97 just turned 95k, I have never even inspected much less replaced the water pump. A car can't do at 100k what it did at 30-50k unless it is over maintained.

If the antifreeze solution is weak and local over heating in the head causes hot pockets the coolant sensor can become uncovered and it will seem to be low on coolant, even if it is not.

It is a sign from the SHO gods to the driver that he needs to step up maintenance BEFORE he make his next daily 135 mph run. It should also be pointed out that that is NOT normal use and PM intervals & TLC will need to quadrupled if that is the intended use.

& he need to be in our owner's directory, ;-)

My coolant sensor was temperature sensitive, would show low only when fully warm.See an earlier posting on physical structure.

The car I am speaking of belongs to Charles Hargrove....it is the ES '96 Jasper car that he bought from SHOlando......I will talk to him about the maintenance issues and be sure it is up to snuff, even though I'm sure it is, he takes better care of his SHO's than most people do their kids..... As for the owners directory, I'm not sure about this '96 or his '99 SHO.....his former SF '97 is on the failure list twice though.
