Sometimes They Do the Right Thing

Larry-

Some new data on my Tropical Green '99 SHO. Car has 48,000 miles, I bought it new (I also bought a '91 SHO new), and had the tranny flushed at 35,000 miles with new fluid. The transmission is now failing with rough light throttle upshifts. Ford of Bellevue says it needs a rebuild; they want $3800; or $3100 for a new tranny with a 3year/36000 warranty. I am investigating private shop alternatives. and trying to get the factory to participate if I go with dealer service. If they tell me to FO, it will be my last Ford purchase; a bigger loss for them than it will be for me.

I'll keep you posted.

Larry-

Great news from Dearborn! Is this a great company or what??

My 99 SHO was out of warranty for 12,000 miles when my tranny puked. I whined to the factory about it; they listened and said they would see what they could to and would get back with me. Actually, I never expected a response, and started investigating private shop alternatives.

One day I got a call from the service manager where I bought the SHO, and he said the factory got in touch with him and were willing to do a three way participation: me, the dealer, and Dearborn. I would have to pay $728 out of pocket out of a total tab of $3100. I was jubilant, and told them to proceed.

I dropped my car off, then Ford engineering got involved in conversations with dealer service. Turns out that just the torque converter would need to be replaced; a total tab of $2000 for which I ended up paying $200. The car runs great and shifts smooth as silk.

Although I cannot prove it, I suspect they look up your name on their database and see how many new Fords you have purchased over the years, to see how loyal of a customer you are before they make a decision on whether or not to help. It wouldn't even surprise me it they look up your credit rating to see if you could continue to buy their cars.

Whatever their rationale, they sure earned my loyalty, and they are on my short list for a new SUV next year. Please post as there're are not all bad outcomes with the factory.

I am happily eating crow. It's nice when that rare dealer steps up for the SHO Customer. Sadly, your experience is the exception, not the norm.
