Summer Tires

New - 03/31/2006

I know this subject has been discussed lately but can't find it posted to
the website, and the emails are gone, so here is the question again. What
have you found for summer tires and why? Both 16" and 17" if you've found a
difference.
Thanks
Greg

I really like the Fuzion ZRi's I had on my SF the last 2 summers, I ran the
225/50/16 speed rating W. I am thinking about getting them out of storage
and putting them on the white one....if I don't sell it.

Good cheap summer tires are the Yokohama AVS ES-100's. Work well for
track days or street, great in the wet, quiet (if they wear even) and
decent tread life. you can pay twice as much and not get a much better
tire. Like most summer tires, not much good in the snow.
Agreed. Excellent tires even before taking $$ into consideration!

Toyo Proxes 4.

Those are all-season tires.
Toyo Summer tires are T1R or T1-S.
I add a vote for the ES 100s. Great summer tire at a great price.

Also my favorite as long as you keep the speeds below 160 mph. They don't work well beyond that spped on "my" SHO at least. Have Fuzions on them now but not as happy with them as the Kuhmos

**Ed Note: Not too many SHO owners have something that will spool up to 170MPH on the Dyno Bud!*****

I second Paul's recommendation the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s.

I I would third them, since they're cheap and do me well, but I have no track experience.
Skye

Ill  I third the 712’s.
The 712 is more of a performance tire by design than the Yokos. While yokos are ok for average driving and a track day once in a while they wont hold up like the 712s.
The average track life for a new out of the box 712 is 3 track events, I bet the Yokos would barely make 2. and before anyone goes in to a tizzy, this is with me driving not you.
Open diff car turning 8500+ rpm and shifting into reverse at 100+ from 3rd.
I think for just street driving they are equal in price so chose you poison by looks.

****Ed Note - Hmmmm how do you explain the tires on the Impaler bud??? Completely rolled over on the side wall at Thunder Hill. Just wondering**********

You need to get the pressure up in the ES100s. They run a softer sidewall, and doing things like running 225/50 tires on 6” or 6.5” SHO rims is not optimal. They are happy with about 50 hot in front, 45 rear.
Yes, my driving style is not like yours, but in buying them just before Blackhawk and the ’03 Madison Convention, then through Gingerman and the CA trip with Thunderhill, those ES100s were just over 50% worn when they had about 18K or so on ‘em. I was quite impressed. Track work doesn’t chew up the edges like with other tires (never had the 712s myself).
ES100s are also lighter for a given size. Kumho likes to make heavy tires.

I've heard about the Diesel's Burnout in the parking lot at last
years' Convention but never seen pix. Bet that 100+ to Reverse Smoke
Show would pretty much put the memory of THAT show to Bed.

And your front tire.

And your front rim.

And your front brake rotor.

And...

Don't know what site you were looking at, Michael, but Tirerack has boatloads in that size.

I prefer the look and feel of the 225/50/16 myself when compared to the 225/55/16. The 225 is taller and just doesn't look as good to me. I know a few people who will carry on about "proper fit", basically saying a SHO wheel is not wide enough for the 225...I think it is more a matter of personal preference. I have had the 225/60's on the '94 slicers and on my stock '99 wheels and think they perform much better than the stock size.

The Width does make a difference. On my VW Golf, for example, the rim is 7” wide and they spec a 205 tire. Definitely no sidewall bulge there.

I have run 225-50-16's on slicers, and 225-55-16's on both the slicers
and V8 wheels. Personally I think the former look too small on most
SHO's, but they work well, especially for a track tire. for the Street
I prefer the 55 series though.
Don Mallinson

Yes, you're right. Should have gone there first. I'm thinking of the 225/50's, Also, the 60's
Michael Hurd

They fill the wheelwell much better than the 55's and especially the 50's.
Had 60's on 3 of my 4 SHO's at one time or another. RM has Goodyear
Eagle 55's to stay stock.

A 60 series tire on the V8 will kill performance. I have 55s now and will go back to the 50s when they are worn out. Best size tire for the car if you are lowered IMHO. Otherwise the wheel gap is a killer.
Paul Nimz

Folks like Tire Rack won’t sell you that size, as they have a lower load capacity than the stock 225/55/16 (look at the Specs page…..they do).
You have to tell them that you have a Grand Am GT, BMW 3-series, or another car that had the 225/50/16 as a stock tire (BTDT).
Ron Porter
___________________________________________________________________________

If You truly want better performance with the stock wheels, get a 215 size tire in a GOOD performance tire. The rim width is a better match, and that will allow the tire to work better.
Ron Porter

The Kumhos 712s I had were 245/45/162. Very stiff sidewalls and they handled great. Pretty long wearing but I had balancing issues due to the wide tire I think, never really could figure it out.
But there was no appreciable sidewall bulge at all. The sidewalls did sick out past the rim but there was very little flex.
Paul Nimz

I Just shop by tire size. They won't even ask what kind of car you have.
Paul Nimz

Not at Tire Rack.
Easy enough to get around, but I got nailed when I tried to buy Kumho MX 225/50/16s for the ’94 SHO. No biggie, as I got the ES100s instead. And, from firsthand reports, it sounds like I got the better tire.
I know other folks who have gotten tripped up by this, as well as at places like NTB (sp??) stores.

I'm  I'm running 225/45/18's on the SF now so I'm not really in the market for anything on a stock wheel...the VW has the wrong size tires now (235/55/16) but the tread is too good to worry about changing out right now, and when it needs tires it will probably get the Fuzion's that are collecting dust on the stock wheels from the SF.
Still toying with the idea of putting 19's on one of them.........hmmmm, decisions, decisions

I have 18's and a set of heavy avons on my SHO in the summer. They look
and handle great but there ain't much coming out of the hole.. :/
I'm thinking about getting a set of 17s or even another set of 16's in a
different style for the summer and just using the factory size.
