William & Ann Farmer - Carbon Takes out an Engine???

new 5/04/2004, updated 6/21/2004

**This was originally posted as cam failure #394. It has been removed from the cam failure list***

Good day,

I just recently purchased a 98 SHO for my wife to upgrade from the 91 SHO (MTX) she has had for a few years now... We purchased it with a cam failure, so I will need to fix it. I don't suspect the original owner filed the cam failure because he didn't seem to know there is a problem with them... Where do I summit the info for my cam failure and who ever can tack another 98 (white) SHO to Florida's list...

Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,
William & Ann Farmer

Good day,

I am cam failure 394, but I don't think mine is a cam failure... I have a number of pics here if you can post them for all to see and maybe determine what went wrong with my SHO... These are rather large pictures and may take a few to load, but they have amazing detail if they are clear... I can't find the page that tells the cylinder numbers, but the second one in from the belt on the back row is where the debris was found in the intake... the pieces look like part of the piston... the valve on left intake port on that cylinder is GONE! The shaft of the valve is still in the head, but the base is gone! I tried to take a picture of it, but the light wasn't in my favor...

Sincerely,
William and Ann

Larry-
I'd need to see the cams a little better but these views are inconclusive. I'm 99% sure that the debris IS the missing valvehead. Carbon could have held the valve open for the piston to strike it. How it got ON TOP of the secondary butterfly would make an interesting story.
Symptoms point to a camfailure but lifting the head will tell for sure.

Eric Lehmann

I had asked Eric to review the pictures and give his best shot at telling me if he could tell if the cam sprockets were the cause. As you can see he's not sure either. In that event, and with the owners own request I am pulling this as a cam failure and as you can see re-title it. Next cam failure will fill this spot.
