*Periodically check the oil level and ATX fluid level in between scheduled service intervals.

Analysis of power steering fluid indicates that it needs to be replaced every 20,000 miles or sooner. It is not required by Ford but it will turn to abrasive tar by 50,000 miles. Given the cost of a new ZF VAPS system it is prudent to change PS fluid rather than expensive German parts.

If you suck out the old PS fluid from the reservoir every 10,000 miles and replace it with fresh ATF you should have no problems. Don't over fill the reservoir or it will "boil over" at your next autocross.

Ford calls for a ATF flush & filter at 30K for 96-97 SHOs; at 60K for 98-99 SHOs which use the Mecron V ATF.  I recommend you flush and filter ALL years at 30k or sooner. Some SHO AX4N transaxles never see 60k without major repairs.
