SHO R.T.S.

08/11/2007, updated 08/15/2007, 08/19/2007, etc

Update 08/15/2008
Well, SHORTS got 4 new coils and 8 new plugs in a desperate attempt to
get rid of a very irritating "Hot" condition misfire.

Damn thing would run like a scalded dog FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
ONLY. As soon as any heat was introduced into the block everything
would go to hell. Tried new plugs - OUCH - that is a 2 - 3 day job. No
Joy. Car NEVER threw a code. New plugs didn't fix the problem.

Ran down to see Doug at Ford Performance Specialists a few weeks ago.
Got the A/F dialed in tight but never got rid of the hot miss. Drove
700 miles home on 7 cylinders.

Doug told me what I guess I already knew - this damn CPU was NEVER
going to throw a code, so just replace all 4 rear coils. After killing
3 members of my family for insurance money, I bought 5 new coils and a
set of NGK 4177 plugs which I gapped at .034.

Got the car running tonight, late - it's almost 10pm here. Project was
delayed with an argument between myself and the power steering line.
Power steering line 0 - Me 1. After retapping the PS pump and adding a
high pressure Stainless steel braided flex line, I won't have to worry
about THAT nonsense again.

That said - Oh Dear - The car doesn't even SMELL the same. Even on
it's past best day. The closest thing I can equate this car's smell is
my wife's built 454 SS Chevelle. That car regularly got the nose 6
inches off the ground. Fastest 1/4 mile car I ever drove in my life.
11's on a BAD day. All day long.
Is it bad for the SHO R T S exhaust to smell like that car's exhaust?

Anyhow, I hope it holds. The car is running a LOT better than it has
when hot. I'll take it to work for the next few days to test it.

I also changed the oil in the supercharger FWIW.

All the stars are aligned, it seems. Too bad I'm such a lousy driver.
If I was ever GONNA hit a 13.999, today would be the day.
Guess I'll start with 45 psi in the tires and let a little out up
front between runs until I start to stick. Wheel spin on the car is "at
will" so the 60' times will probably be all over the place with me.

If wheel spin is at will, you should be able to figure out what pressure to run in the tires. Assuming you're not using a real slick, all you have to do to figure this out is find somewhere to lay down a bunch of patches. Keep adjusting the air pressure until you're leaving a nice full tread mark on the ground. Any more or less air than what you see giving you a full patch and you're getting less traction. No secret to it.

Forgot to add: what about drag radials?"

Forgot to add: what about drag radials so we can find the next weakest link. ;)

LOL hook up and you WILL find the next weakest link.

Jim
_____________________________________________________________________________
The early nitrous guys like Scott waters went to drag radials with no ill effects. All SHOs seem to have a barrier at 14-flat with street tires and a stock suspension. Scott could never get below a few 14-flats he turned until he got the DRs, then he went to the 13.80s (13.80-81 best, IIRC). Ed Bartoli (sp?) got a 13.99 on street tires on juice, IIRC. Same with V6 cars. Mark Nunnally couldn’t crack 13s until he went to DRs. Unless someone gets the power level up enough, I suspect that V8s wouldn’t have an axle issue.
Ron Porter

You guys hit it on the head.
I need 2 things - Drag radials and a new driver.

wheel spin, Wheel spin WHEEL SPIN ! ! !

Could not launch to save my life.

Terrible variances in 60' times. One time I spun so bad I thought I
broke, let up & started to leave the lane. Gave it a little gas to see
if it could still move and it took off. Finished with a low 17 on that
run, not so good. There was a 9 second Lightning in the other lane
that run. He had time to make a sandwich, light a cigarette and open a
beer before I got there.
Most of the rest of my runs were low 14.8 - high 14.7 range. Tire
pressures incrementally dropped all day long to try to improve
traction. Nothing helped much.

Best mod I did all day was ADD a 200# passenger. Dropped my 60' to
2.01 and got my best run of the day of 14.7.

Traps were 92 - 94 mph.

There's tons left in this car, I just left it spinning all day. I
could see about a 14 flat with a perfect high stall launch and
slightly lower shift points. I couldn't even dump it at 2000 rpms
without just sitting and spinning.

Then again, I didn't break anything either.

Just curious, are you guys doing anything to keep weight transfer to a minimum? I have no clue what you are doing for the SHO. Outside better tires, some sort of bar, you could go the cheap route for testing, and chain/strap the front end down.
Rik
_____________________________________________________________________________
Next time that you run it with this combo, walk it out a few feet to get it
rolling, THEN mat it.

With street tires on stock SHO wheels, tire pressure in the 30-35 range are
optimal. Below that, you aren't getting an optimal contact patch.

If you don't want to go crazy with suspension mods for occasional drag strip
runs, fab a set of bars to lock the rear suspension in place at the strip. That
will help a bunch.
Ron Porter

* This from the guy that has the best 60' times in our class!!*
_____________________________________________________________________________
Yep. Locking the rear-end would help, then tying down the front end. I had toyed
with the idea of a cable on the front end, to at least let the suspension
compress a bit, but not extend too far.

About 10 years ago, Car Craft took a stock Bonneville SSEi from mid 15s to about
a 14.6-14.8 with a set of Air Lift air springs on the rear (and not available
for a Taurus), plus playing with tire pressures and the launch.

Wish I would have saved that article.

Milestones - Over 1000 miles with the new tranny and TQ converter - I
guess it's gonna live.

~15 MPG all city driving + "lots" of spirited launches. Not bad :-P

I'll get some highway #'s this weekend as well as some 1/4 mile
time slips, weather permitting.
Larry keeps saying high 13's, I don't think so, but Byron is a sticky
track according to the Cobra guys. I've never been there so I'm going
on their word.

Uncl Lar is the eternal optimist. Not to mention I can launch better than my dear friend. Launch in the greater scheme of things is milliseconds, but hey whatever it takes. There are NOS GIII's that barely made it to low 14's, I know, because I was there at Lapeer. I'm still shooting for 13.xxxx. Maybe we get there. Maybe we don't. Will be a gas trying.

The reason of this post is to announce that last week I got that
dreaded "Yellow Card" in the mail. Here in the Chicago area, it's pass
emissions or no plates, up to and including driver's license
suspension.

MOONWALK ! ! !

YEAH BABY ! ! !

WOO HOO ! ! ! !!

I passed. I PASSED. I PASSED ! ! ! ! :-P :-D

My Supercoupe/Lightning/Cobra/SHO/Fordpartcobblebastard  got a new
sticker and the full blessing of the Illinois EPA ! !

Thanks to Doug for the tuning, worth every penny. The more I drive it,
the more this car seems to settle in. Still get a lean code or two
every now and again , but they are getting fewer and fewer. GOT to get
my Waptop replaced as I owe Doug some dataloging too.

FWIW - Got about 700 miles on the new tranny, and either I'm getting
used to it or it is becoming just a bit more civilized. Probably just
me unconsciously learning where NOT to leave the accelerator during 1
- 2 shifts. It will still bang like a mutha at certain rpm and gas
pedal combos. I somewhat fear for my motor mounts next.

The SHO R.T.S has exceeded the mileage which the stock tranny did
carry the car today.

At the very least, I can say that the new tranny, with all its
upgrades, DID outlive the stock tranny, for whatever THAT means...

But then, I've had good teachers....

Gonna keep pushing this twit to see what it will take.

I moved the ZR tires from the Grey 96 over to the SHO R.T.S. car today
- FWIW the slicers look like ass on the grey car - it is now truly
invisible.

Anyhow, I put my G-Tech on the Supercharged car today and made a few
runs. I got totally mixed signals.

On one side, I'm seeing 310 - 320 Hp to the wheels. On the OTHER side
I'm seeing a 14.8 and 14.9 quarter mile.

SOMEBODY is lying here.

An all too familiar whistle was heard today in Lombard, Illinois. ;-)

SHO M90 project, version 3, fired over. Then it smoked the tires.
3.99:1 gears = good. Dead nuts steady 8.5 PSI of boost. Damn thing is a
beast.

huh.

As usual, Larry was driving. This time the tranny HELD.

Doug - there seems to be a few idle issues to be debugged.

Ahead of schedule at this point. Might even be running as early as
late Saturday, assuming the beer holds out. ;-)

Got the entire subframe finished tonight. I think I'm starting to get

Expect I'll have the whole thing re-hung tomorrow night sometime.
Maybe be running on Saturday, to begin debugging.

3:99 gears = yummmmm....

Got my torque converter today. This guy was talking WAY over my head,
which doesn't happen very often, but explained everything to me after
I said "What?"

Said this TQ Conv. is good for somewhere near 600 hp. I don't think
that will be a problem.

Got the Converter in, the tranny mated to the block, and the subframe
mated to the drivetrain. Should be testing by Sunday.

New Tranny is WAY over my head, but I had some excellent teachers with
step by step instructions which I swore to keep quiet and I will, so
don't ask me. I still did soooo much to it, and it is way out of spec
build instructions, so if it pukes on startup I guess I won't be THAT
surprised.

Torque converter needs to be abused. If it survives, I will spread the
word and make it available to everybody. Cost should be about $450.00
to $500.00 with core, but it will outlive anything you can do to it.
Mine was SOOO much more, but I ate the prototyping AND it is a SHO
converter, NOT a SLO converter like most others are using.

Hopefully running by late this weekend, weather permitting.

Gonna start pulling the tranny tonight. Think I'll just drop the whole
works. Change a few bushings and strut pivot bearings, etc. while I'm
in there. Maybe pretty up a few things too.

Fellow I'm having do my torque converter work begged to see exactly
what exploded in my old converter before building a beefed up unit for
me. I'm very confident in this guy - friend of a friend of a friend
kind of thing, but not just an internet hit on somebody local.

I offered him another known good converter for a core and he said that
wasn't what he was looking for - he wants to do a post mortem, on his
time, to see what popped. I can respect that. Had 5 SHO converters in
his shop at the time FWIW.
Going to be a custom job, but if this holds up I think I can work a
deal with him to build a few others for some of you who are doing
nitrous, etc.

First one is going to cost me a good chunk of change compared to
stock, but if it lives I'm a happy camper and it was all worth it.
Plus, after the beating it's going to get from me we can further tweek
things for the V8 crowd, if we are so lucky to survive this venture.

To arrive at an affordable drop in is one of our goals here.

Oh well, time to go get all messy. At this rate I may be running again
before surgery. That would be a very big blessing. Then again, I know
the clown who just built his first FWD tranny, so I'm not holding my
breath just yet. This is the good stuff :-P

My welder - What were YOU thinking? DOH !
Today's camweld (a "knocker") lost his trailer at the last minute,
doing tranny work instead today. I'm glad, with leg surgery looming
large, I needed to find some time somewhere.
:-)
An oversight in my tranny project for the SHO R.T.S. is being
corrected today. I've got the whole darn thing apart again so I can do
something that should have been on the Top of the tranny "to do" list.
I'm going to weld my Differential pin to the housing permanently, so
nobody leaves home during a session in the burnout box. I think Clare
coughed one up a while back, evidence enough that I better take some
precautionary steps.

There are much heavier materials in here than up by the camshafts - no
worries about blowing holes in anything. I just would like to have one
higher setting than I've got to get a little more penetration on this
big hardened pin. Oh well, I'll get it plenty good to keep it from
ever coming out, just think I could do it best with a few more amps.

I've been doing a lot of Aluminum work this year too. I've GOT to get
myself into a nice TIG welder one of these days. Getting sick of
dragging things back and forth to the machine shop at work.

Got the new 255 LPH fuel pump in the car and running today. Modified a
fuel cell from my 97 parts car to fit the bigger pump.
Dropped the tank and pulled the original fuel pump unit out and the 97
fit perfect... EXCEPT... the wiring loom plug for the 96 fuel cell
ends in a female plug, the 97 in a male plug. So, I was trying to put
a male together with a male - no good can come of that.
Pulled the fuel pump cell out of the tank again and disassembled both
fuel pump cells. Swapped over the wiring from the 96 pump and all was
good to go.
Put it all together and fired it over, no sweat.

FWIW - the 96 loom has little clips to lock it tight onto the fuel
tank so the wires can't chafe. The 97 offers no such luxury. I know of
a few 97's that have had fuel pump fuse issues due to chafed wires.
Never heard of it on a 96, now I know why.
Once again 96 > 97. Sometimes the little things matter.

I took a bunch of pix, but my camera card reader is only on my laptop,
er "waptop", which is on life support right now so I can't get the pix
out of my camera.

Dropping the gas tank is stupid easy - Jack up the car. Take an impact
gun and extension with a 13mm socket. 2 straps hold up the tank. Put
the jack under the tank after setting the car down on jack stands and
jack up the tank slightly. Remove the 2 mounting bolts holding the
straps. Lower the jack, the tank comes down. There is enough slack in
the tank hoses to do just about anything you want to do without having
to remove them.

That 2nd from the right is the one I put in mine. took a little off the cap and had to modify the sump screen. I used a couple of cable ties and a hose clamp to secure it since it to the outside of the pump since it won't fit into the hole at the bottom of the pump. The electrical connecting plugs and hoses all fit perfect though. Been in there for 3 years now.

I'm SOOO Happy ! ! ! :-) :-) :-)
Reunited with a lost friend tonight. I honestly had no idea what had
happened to him.

When I got the car running, I sent an Email out to "R" - Roger Eder,
the man who got me started on this project. Never heard back.
I hadn't talked with him in a long time, so I feared the worst - he
changed Email addy's. ;-)

I just spent a long time on the phone with him and he'll be coming out
to my house this weekend to see the monster he started. Maybe he'll
bring his 12,000 mile 91 Tbird Super Coupe, which donated its original
blower to the SHO R.T.S. car (some kind of replacement recall, IIRC),
wouldn't mind seeing his SHO again either.

Seems he's had a series of health problems but is feeling more chipper
these days. Maybe I'll ask him to sign my intake manifold...

Also. Just finished tweaking a 97 SHO in tank fuel cell assembly.
Sourced a nearly drop in 255 LPH high pressure fuel pump to feed the
pig. Maybe I'll drop the tank this Sunday and put that bad boy in,
beer permitting.
Right now, I have the intake opened again. I had one backfire this
week that I can't explain yet. I figured it may have been a leaky fuel
injector. I figured wrong, no leaks here.
Raining hard now, so I'll put it together again tomorrow and drive to
work with it again on Friday.

OK -
Mission accomplished. Now I'll tell you "the Rest of the story".

My mission was to put together a forced induction package for our cars
that hasn't been tried before. Furthering the challenge, I set a goal
to do it on a zero budget.

When I pulled into my driveway last night, I felt I had done
everything I set out to do in plan "A". I had gotten the car together
and running, took it to work, ran around for several miles - had a
normal day with the car. And I never spent a penny on the project -
all freebies, leftovers, and hand made parts from scrap stock from
work. Even the belt is off my truck stuff.

3 years ago, I was GIVEN a slightly used Eaton M90 supercharger by a
friend (Roger Eder) on the promise that I would do my best to put it
on one of our cars eventually. Took a while, I lost heart a few times
along the way. Project stalled completely about 1 1/2 years ago with
my car wreck.

Then my Mom (Thelma) passed away last winter - I needed time ALONE.
Lots of it. What better way than to go into the garage night after
night with a drillpress, dremel, and BEER. And leftover injectors,
pipe, welding torches, grinders, and BEER. Then Life sort of smothered
me again and I put down the wrenches.

A few weeks later, my wife's mom (Sharon) took ill and suddenly passed
away. The was the final nudge that got me to resolve to finish what I
promised to do.

Last Sunday, when I actually fired over the car, it was a more special
feeling. I didn't just finish a project, I kept a promise to myself
and a couple others I can't make promises to anymore.

I'm naming this project the SHO R.T.S. in honor of the folks who made
me finish this.
R is for Roger - Never would have begun without your spark.
T is for Thelma, my mother, who rekindled this dead project.
S is for Sharon, my wife's mother, who nursed the flames when they
were dying back once more.

NOW, it's time to spend some money. :-)
Gonna upgrade the fuel system, build the new tranny, a few other
tweeks that I want but didn't NEED. With luck, I'll be rolling into
Gingerman this fall.

Man, all I can say is somewhere (we don't know if we should look up or down!) Smokey is giving you the thumbs up! Sometimes "because it is there" is just a good enough excuse.

We have a lot of talent and drive in the people associated with the SHO. You are another great example.

Feels great going where no one has admittedly gone and coming back with the flag doesn't it. Amid the few scattered nay Sayers to boot....

I think we need to partner up and see what we can really break together :-) We will need one piece axels that then go out and get hardened for sure then.

I think you're seeing the only one of these. Not that I'll never make
another, just that it'd be different next time because of all I've
learned from this challenge.
With the day job and all, I figure about 3 - 4 years wait for the next one. :-)

Thanks for the extra kind words, Don. Yeah. I think Smokey would like it too.

Congratulations on your success with the project sir. Sorry for your loses but at times some losses can be a means of gains in many aspects. Glad to see that you have overcome all your trials and tribulations. The SHO R.T.S. looks great.

What's all this commotion about Shorts?

Beautiful work, Eric! Maybe one of these days when I can get to a convention I can admire more than just pictures of what looks to be an amazing setup!

Holy crap.

Imagine a M90 SC MTX V8 SHO... That's just awesome on so many levels...
And quite a mouthful of acronyms to boot.

Hmmmm.

Would be easier to bolt my setup on Scott's car than to pull his
tranny for mine.

Might be worth it just to see what comes apart! I won't say "Never" to
this supposition.

And Doug SHOuld know what to do to make the tune if he does both.... "Smash" the two files together for a starting point...

Well, they weren't much over 200k, certainly not very big compared to what
some people send to the list. And they are ON-TOPIC, and also you said
"huge fricken".
